Costly Joy

I start every morning with coffee with God through daily devotions from Our Daily Bread. Today’s devotion is titled “Costly Joy” Glenn Packiam wrote this devotion. The scripture reading is Matthew 13:44–46 with the key verse, “When a man found it, he . . . went and sold all he had and bought that field.”, Matthew 13:44. My beloved children, grandchildren, cousins, nephews, brothers, and sisters in Christ, all I write, I first pray to God to guide my words to serve as spiritual food and guidance. I desire God to be my sole source of writing. All the credit goes to God, not me. I am his humble servant. I thank God that He led to use Our Daily Bread Ministries as my inspiration for comments.

When I was in middle school, we watched the world series on television. Sandy Koufax struck out the last batter, and the Dodgers won the World Series. We danced and jumped up and down in joy.

The parables Jesus used to describe the Kingdom of Heaven; the word “joy” is in the first parable. The person found a treasure, hid it, And sold everything and bought the field with Joy. (Matthew 13:44). In Matthew 13:45-46, a merchant looking for fine pearls, found a valuable one. He sold all that he had and bought the pearl. In both parables, the individuals sold everything for the treasure and pearl.

With Jesus, to lose everything is to gain Jesus. Giving up everything for Jesus is what He requires. Joy, surrender, and knowing Jesus is the treasure and pearl.

Reflect:

How have you experienced joy in your relationship with Jesus? What is He inviting you to surrender to Him?

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, open our eyes to see the treasure that You are! Direct our hearts to You as the source of pure and unfailing joy and let us ever be fixed on You. Grant us the grace to surrender all to You.

My Prayer for You:

May God bless and open your eyes to see the treasure that He is!
