When the Splendor Is Gone

I start every morning with coffee with God through daily devotions from Our Daily Bread. Today’s devotion is titled “When the Splendor Is Gone.” Dave Branon wrote this devotion. The scripture reading is Lamentations 3:13–24 with the key verse, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.”, Lamentations 3:22. My beloved children, grandchildren, cousins, nephews, brothers, and sisters in Christ, all I write, I first pray to God to guide my words to serve as spiritual food and guidance. I desire God to be my sole source of writing. All the credit goes to God, not me. I am his humble servant. I thank God that He led to use Our Daily Bread Ministries as my inspiration for comments.

Our life was terrific and ideal. We did everything together on Sundays with our friends and children. Our children who were doing well in school and athletics and were popular. One day, “The Splendor was gone.” Our daughter attempted suicide. The paramedics revived her, but her brain was deprived of oxygen too long. Now she is in a semi-vegetate state in a long-term care facility.

My wife and I were devastated beyond words. We felt just like the Prophet Jeremiah in Lamentations 3. For us, all hope for the complete family we knew was lost.

However, God showed that He was with us through the outpouring of support from friends and family. People from around the world came to visit and pray over our daughter. Even in our darkest days, God’s great faithfulness shines through. God’s “compassions never fail. They are new every morning” (vv. 22–23).

Reflect:

How has God encouraged you when you felt hopeless? How might He want you to use that to inspire others?

Prayer:

Thank You, Father, that You are the God of compassion. Even while I walk through the valley of darkness, the morning will follow as I remember Your compassion and Your faithfulness.

My Prayer for You:

May God bless you and remember that He is the God of compassion. Even while you walk through the valley of darkness, the morning will follow as you remember His compassion and His faithfulness.
