I start every day with God and reading daily devotions from Our Daily Bread. Today's devotion is titled "Remember and Celebrate." Bill Crowder wrote this devotion. The scripture reading is from Luke 22:14–23. The key verse is, "[Jesus] took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." Luke 22:19. My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ; before I write, I first pray to God to guide my words to serve as spiritual food and guidance. I desire God to be my sole source of writing. All the credit goes to God, not me. I am his humble servant. I thank God that He led me to use Our Daily Bread Ministries to inspire comments and witnessing.
When I was young and ignorant about God and Christ, I did not take communion seriously. When I became a Christian, I took communion very seriously. I knew about the sacrifice God made for our salvation. When I was an AWANA commander, I helped young children understand the anguish God The Father went through as He watched His son suffer and die.
Before, The Passover meal commemorates the Israelites' exodus from Egypt. A lamb is eaten with bitter herbs symbolizing the bitterness of slavery in Egypt. At the same time, unleavened bread represents their hasty departure.
Now, Jesus altered the Passover meal ceremony. He indicated that this particular meal was a covenant-making one. God's covenant with humanity renewed through Jesus' sacrificial death. In this way, the Passover would find "fulfillment in the kingdom of God" (Luke 22:16).
Reflect
How often do you find yourself just going through the motions when taking communion? What are some ways to keep your focus on the cross?
My prayer for us:
Father, when we come to the memorial table, help us to remember why our forgiveness was so costly, and help us to celebrate Your great, awesome love.
